Creating a template is similar to creating a plan, but templates are used for dispatching a plan to other users in your organization.
In this article, you'll learn:
1 How it works
Dispatching involves more components than creating your own plan. The same plan might need to be dispatched to multiple employees. To allow for this, we use templates.
Creating a template feels similar to creating a plan. You select a plan type, associate the template to a job, and add goals. But unlike creating a plan, no subject or manager is selected. These decisions are made when you dispatch. Separating the participants from the content of the plan allows for re-dispatching because no specific user is tied to a template.
The other decision made when dispatching is scheduling. A date is selected when the plan (a template) will be sent to the subject and manager.
2 Create a template
Click the Manage Templates link under Development or Performance in the main menu. Templates are organized by job. Generic templates are not linked to a job and are displayed at the top of the Manage Templates page. Click the Create Template button.
Select a plan type. All plan types with at least one goal type show up as options.
Unlike self-creating a plan, the cycle due dates cannot be adjusted on the template, so make sure these are set up properly in Cycles. To make changes to the number of days in a cycle stage, follow the steps in the Edit or clone cycles article.
Select a job to associate to the template or choose to make it generic and click Next. For generic templates, click the Create Goal button. Once you've finished creating goals, click Confirm. For templates linked to a job, you might see suggested goals based on the competencies required in that job. Select goals to add to your template, click Next, and then click Confirm.
If the plan type has an assigned scale, you'll be able to set a target on the template. A target is optional but the plan cannot be rated without a target. You'll also see a Hide Ratings switch. Turn this on to hide manager ratings from the subject until the manager disables this setting when they're ready to reveal them. Click Save.
If you based the template on a plan type that uses weighted scoring, point to the 3-dot icon at the top of the page and choose Set Weights. Enter a percentage for each goal group and (if assigned weighted scoring is used) each goal and click Save.
3 Dispatch a template
Once created, make sure the template is published so it can be dispatched. Follow the steps in the Publish or unpublish a template article.

- Select Plans as the Service.
- Select Development Plans or Performance Plans as the type and click Next.
- Open a job in the index and select a template to dispatch. Click Next.
- Click the Select users link and select a subject.
- Select a cycle (if one is not already set up on the plan type) and click Next.
- Click the Select users link and select a manager. Click Next.
- Click the calendar icon and select a dispatch date.
- Modify the cycle defaults if needed.
- Click the Finish Dispatch button.
